California stores moving to Shopify
California has more Shopify stores than any other state and the largest Magento base still to move, so the pages below cover what a California store carries across, including district taxes.

The short answer
DopaShift moves California stores from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace to Shopify and Shopify Plus. California has 185,265 live Shopify stores and 1,056 live Magento stores on Store Leads as of October 9, 2026, the most of any state on both counts. Every project includes an SEO and conversion baseline before launch and 90 days of monitoring after it.
Ecommerce in California by the numbers
Store Leads counted 185,265 live Shopify stores in California on October 9, 2026, out of 1,203,111 in the United States. That is the largest Shopify base of any state, and the mix is heavy on consumer goods: 53,835 apparel stores (29.1%), 20,986 home and garden stores (11.3%) and 19,465 beauty and fitness stores (10.5%), on the same Store Leads report and date.
The same tracker counted 1,056 live Magento stores in California on October 9, 2026. Only about one store in eight publishes a state, so the real number is higher, but California tops the Magento list as well. Shopify’s own report, The Entrepreneur Effect, puts the economic activity of California businesses on Shopify at $173.0 billion for the year ending June 30, 2026, supporting about 573,000 jobs. Shopify models that figure as the direct, indirect and induced effects of merchant sales, so treat it as Shopify’s estimate, not a government count.
The Magento number matters because Magento versions lose support on fixed dates. Each 2.4 release has a published end date for standard support, and Magento Open Source gets no extended support after that. Every one of those 1,056 California stores is on a version that is either already unsupported or has a date on the calendar. The Magento hub carries every current date, and the free version checker reads your version from the storefront.
Sales tax when you move a California store to Shopify
As of October 2026, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration treats a retailer as engaged in business in the state when its total combined sales of tangible goods for delivery in California exceed $500,000 in the preceding or current calendar year. There is no transaction count. Sales by related companies count toward the same figure.
California’s statewide rate is 7.25%. Most areas add district taxes on top, and those range from 0.10% to 2.00%. Since April 25, 2019, a retailer over the $500,000 figure is treated as engaged in business in every district that imposes a district tax and collects district use tax on all deliveries into those districts.
Sourcing is where California differs from most states. The state rate and the 1% local tax are allocated to the seller’s place of business, the location where the principal negotiations happen, while district taxes follow the delivery address. Shopify’s US tax reference lists California as hybrid for that reason, defaults to the destination setting, and notes that the choice changes how sales are reported on your return, not the rate the customer pays. The right setting depends on how you registered with the CDTFA, so we confirm it against your seller’s permit before launch.
Marketplaces are separate. Under the Marketplace Facilitator Act, a registered facilitator has been responsible for collecting and paying tax on sales it facilitates since October 1, 2019, which is why Shopify leaves marketplace sales out of its California liability figure.
Shopify Tax is available on every plan. It calculates rates from the buyer’s full address, suggests product categories so exempt or reduced items are handled correctly, and shows a state-by-state view of where you are approaching a threshold. It is free until $100,000 in sales, then 0.35% per order on standard plans and 0.25% on Shopify Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. Shopify Tax does not file California returns for a store that moves today: automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so filing stays with your accountant or a filing app. None of this is tax advice. We set the collection up as the CDTFA pages describe it and you confirm it with whoever files for you.
What California stores usually bring with them
The industry mix on Store Leads shows up in the stores we quote. Apparel stores arrive with large variant counts and seasonal drops. Beauty stores bring subscriptions, bundles and sample programs that have to survive the move. Home and garden stores often carry heavy items with freight rules that need rebuilding in Shopify’s shipping profiles.
California’s Shopify base includes some of the best-known direct-to-consumer brands in the country. Allbirds and Dr. Squatch both appear in Shopify’s own Plus customer stories. Alo Yoga, Fashion Nova and Skims run on Shopify, which their storefront code shows. None of these are DopaShift clients. They are examples of the kind of catalog and traffic Shopify already handles for California brands, which is the question a store on Magento or WooCommerce usually asks first.

We work US business hours and reply within 2 business days. For a team on Pacific Time that means calls in your morning or early afternoon, with your whole working day overlapping ours. We don’t have an office in California and won’t claim one. What you get is the same person from scoping to the end of the 90-day watch, a written baseline of your rankings and conversion rate before launch, and a weekly note during the build.
Launch timing follows your calendar. California apparel and beauty stores tend to avoid a go-live close to Black Friday, and we plan around that with you.
Where to start
Pick the hub for the platform you’re on: Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. Each hub lists the timeline, what moves and what is rebuilt. If you’re not sure what your store runs on, paste the URL into the store check on the home page and it will tell you. Then send us the details for a scoped price.
Questions California stores ask us
Does a California store need to collect district tax on every order?
As of October 2026, a retailer whose sales for delivery into California exceed $500,000 in the current or preceding calendar year is treated as engaged in business in every district and collects district use tax wherever it delivers. Below that figure, district tax depends on where you have a presence. Shopify Tax applies district rates by delivery address once California collection is on.
Why does Shopify call California a hybrid state?
The state rate and the 1% local tax follow the seller's place of business, while district taxes follow the delivery address. Shopify's US tax reference lists California as hybrid and says the sourcing setting changes how sales are reported on your return, not the rate collected. Which setting you pick depends on how you registered with the CDTFA.
Do marketplace sales count toward our California threshold in Shopify?
No. Shopify's tax reference excludes marketplace sales from the California liability figure because a registered marketplace facilitator has been responsible for tax on those sales since October 1, 2019. Your own site sales still count, and the CDTFA counts them on a combined basis with related companies.
Can you work with a team in Los Angeles or the Bay Area?
Yes. We work US business hours, so the overlap with Pacific Time covers a full working day. Calls land in your morning or early afternoon and every email gets a reply within 2 business days.
