Texas stores moving to Shopify

Texas is one of the few large states where an in-state seller charges local tax by its own location, and this page covers that and the rest of what a Texas store carries to Shopify.

Shopify Partner since 2016. Fixed price, agreed before we start.

The short answer

DopaShift moves Texas stores from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace to Shopify and Shopify Plus. Texas is an origin state for sellers with a place of business there, so local tax follows your location, with extra local use tax only when the delivery address carries a higher rate. Every project includes an SEO and conversion baseline before launch and 90 days of monitoring after it.

Ecommerce in Texas by the numbers

Store Leads counted 100,794 live Shopify stores in Texas on October 9, 2026, third among US states behind California and Florida. Apparel is the largest category at 30,979 stores (30.7%), the highest apparel share of the four largest Shopify states, followed by 12,211 home and garden stores (12.1%) and 11,003 beauty and fitness stores (10.9%), all on the same report and date.

Shopify’s report The Entrepreneur Effect puts the economic activity of Texas businesses on Shopify at $48.2 billion for the year ending June 30, 2026, supporting about 161,000 jobs, and notes the dollar figure is up 133% since 2022. Shopify models the number as the direct, indirect and induced effects of merchant sales, so it is Shopify’s estimate.

The same Store Leads tracker counted 462 live Magento stores in Texas on October 9, 2026, third behind California and New York. Only about one store in eight publishes a state, so the true number is higher. Each of those stores runs a Magento version with a fixed end date for standard support, Magento Open Source gets no extended support past that date, and Adobe Commerce Cloud customers also face dates on which Adobe can suspend traffic to unsupported versions. The Magento hub carries every current date, and the version checker reads your version from the storefront.

Sales tax when you move a Texas store to Shopify

As of October 2026, the Texas Comptroller does not require a remote seller to hold a permit or collect when its total Texas revenue in the preceding twelve calendar months is below $500,000. There is no transaction count. A seller with a place of business in Texas is already engaged in business there, and the threshold is what it watches in other states.

Texas imposes a 6.25% state sales and use tax, and local jurisdictions can add up to 2%, for a maximum combined rate of 8.25%. For a Texas seller, local tax is origin based: a seller selling online from its place of business collects state and local tax based on that location, and if the buyer’s local rate is higher, the seller also collects the additional local use tax due where the item is delivered. Shopify’s tax reference lists Texas as origin for sellers with a physical presence and treats it as a destination state for a store that has nexus but no location there. Remote sellers who do collect can either use the delivery address or elect the single local use tax rate, which is 1.75% for 2026 and is set each year by the Comptroller.

A marketplace provider is required to certify to its sellers that it will collect Texas sales and use tax, and a remote seller that only sells through a certifying marketplace does not need a Texas permit. Texas counts marketplace sales toward the remote seller threshold, so Shopify includes them in its Texas liability figure, the opposite of how it treats California and Florida.

Shopify Tax runs on every plan. It calculates from the buyer’s full address, which handles the local use tax difference between your location and the delivery point, and it uses product categories for items with special treatment. It shows a state-by-state threshold view, is free until $100,000 in sales, then charges 0.35% per order on standard plans or 0.25% on Shopify Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. Automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so a Texas store moving now files through its accountant or a filing app. This is not tax advice. We set up collection and the origin setting as the Comptroller’s publications describe them, and your filer confirms it.

What Texas stores usually bring with them

The Texas stores we quote come in two shapes. Outdoor, western and apparel brands bring big variant grids, sizing charts, and retail stores whose stock has to show online. B2B and industrial sellers bring customer-specific pricing, quote requests and an ERP that expects a nightly file, and they want Shopify B2B to replace their customer groups without a second system.

Texas’s Shopify base covers both. Chubbies, based in Austin, moved to Shopify Plus in 2014 per Shopify’s own case study. Tecovas runs its Austin headquartered boot brand on Shopify, with Shopify POS in its stores, per Shopify’s published interviews. Sunday Riley in Houston, Howler Brothers in Austin and European Wax Center in Plano run on Shopify, which their storefront code shows. None of these are DopaShift clients. They are examples of what the platform already carries for Texas brands, which is the first question from a store still on Magento or WooCommerce.

Working with DopaShift from Texas

We work US business hours and reply within 2 business days. For a team on Central Time that is a full working day of overlap, and El Paso on Mountain Time still gets most of it. We don’t have an office in Texas and won’t claim one. You work with the same person from the scoping call through the 90-day watch, you get a written baseline of rankings and conversion rate before launch, and you get a weekly note during the build.

If your retail stores run on Shopify POS after the move, we test the inventory sync before launch, not after, so online stock matches the shelf from day one.

Where to start

Open the hub for your platform: Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. Each hub sets out the timeline, what moves as data and what gets rebuilt. If you don’t know what your store runs on, the store check on the home page reads it from the URL. Then send us the details for a scoped price.

Questions Texas stores ask us

Is Texas origin or destination based for a Shopify store?

For a seller with a place of business in Texas, local sales tax is based on that location, and the seller collects any additional local use tax due where the item is delivered if that rate is higher. Shopify's tax reference lists Texas as origin for sellers with a physical presence and destination for everyone else. We set the sourcing to match your Comptroller registration.

What is the Texas remote seller threshold?

As of October 2026, a remote seller with total Texas revenue below $500,000 in the preceding twelve calendar months is not required to hold a permit or collect. There is no transaction count. Above that, a remote seller can collect at the delivery address or elect the single local use tax rate, which is 1.75% for 2026.

We sell B2B and outdoor gear. Is Shopify Plus required?

Not on its own. Shopify B2B is on every plan, so company accounts, price lists and net terms do not force Plus. Plus becomes the answer when you need checkout customization, several storefronts, or the Plus-only B2B features such as unlimited catalogs. We say which one on the scoping call.

What hours can an Austin or Dallas team reach you?

We work US business hours, which gives a full working day of overlap with Central Time, and El Paso on Mountain Time still gets most of the day. Every email gets a reply within 2 business days. We don't have a Texas office.
