Shopify to Shopify Plus upgrade
For growing Shopify stores moving onto Plus, with the checkout, B2B and app stack decisions made by an advisor before the upgrade, not discovered after it.
Shopify Partner since 2016. Fixed-price audit first, upgrade quoted after it.
The short answer
Shopify Plus starts to pay for itself when you need something only Plus has: a customized checkout, more than 3 B2B catalogs, expansion stores, more than 15 staff accounts or higher API limits, and Shopify says brands typically upgrade at about $80,000 a month in online sales. As of October 2026, Plus is $2,300 USD a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, and higher-volume stores move to a variable platform fee based on revenue. An upgrade touches your checkout, your apps, your staff permissions and your contract. We run a fixed-price Plus readiness audit first, then quote and run the upgrade.
Why upgrade
Why Shopify stores move to Plus
- 01
Checkout customization. Plus is the only plan with checkout extensibility, so branded checkout, custom fields and Functions-driven discounts and shipping rules need it.
- 02
B2B beyond the basics. Catalogs assigned directly to a company, unlimited catalogs, deposits and partial payments are Plus-only; the basic B2B features ship on every plan.
- 03
Scale limits. Expansion stores for new markets, higher API limits and unlimited staff accounts are what large catalogs and multi-region brands run into on Advanced.
What an upgrade changes, and what it doesn't
Stays as it is
- Products, collections, customers and orders stay where they are. An upgrade changes the plan, not the store.
- Theme, apps and domains carry over unchanged
- Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and tax settings carry over
Needs a rebuild
- Checkout: anything built on checkout.liquid is rebuilt with checkout UI extensions and Functions
- B2B: customer tags and discount codes rebuilt as companies, catalogs and price lists
- Markets and expansion stores: which markets become stores, and what is shared
- Flow and Launchpad automations that replace manual launch and tagging work
- Apps that need Plus features, and apps the Plus stack makes redundant
Nothing is lost
- Nothing is lost in an upgrade. The risk is a checkout rebuilt wrong, which is why it is tested on a development store first.
How a Plus upgrade runs
Week 1
Readiness audit
We read your store, checkout customisations, apps, B2B needs and revenue, and write the plan: what Plus changes for you, what it costs, and whether it pays for itself yet.
Weeks 2 to 6
Build on a development store
Checkout UI extensions and Functions replace anything on checkout.liquid. Companies, catalogs and price lists replace customer tags. Expansion stores are set up where markets justify them.
Launch day
Switch the plan and go live
Shopify moves the plan in a day. We publish the rebuilt checkout, confirm payments, tax and tracking, and watch the first orders through.
30 days after
Watch and tune
Conversion at checkout is compared with the month before. Flow and Launchpad automations go in once the store is stable.
Questions stores ask before moving to Plus
What does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?
As of October 2026, Shopify's Help Center lists Plus at $2,500 USD a month on a 1-year term and $2,300 USD a month on a 3-year term for US stores. Shopify describes that as the price for standard setups, and says more complex, higher-volume businesses move to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model. There are no setup fees on any Shopify plan.
What is the Plus variable platform fee?
It is a fee tied to your revenue that replaces the flat monthly price for larger or more complex businesses. Shopify says the rate differs for B2B and direct-to-consumer orders, but it does not publish the revenue threshold where it starts or the percentage. You find out the figure from the Shopify Plus sales team, and we ask for it in writing before you sign.
Can I pay for Plus monthly with no contract?
No. Plus is sold on a 1-year or a 3-year term, and Shopify's pricing FAQ says you can cancel when your term commitment expires. The 3-year term is $200 a month cheaper than the 1-year term, which is $7,200 over three years, so the question is whether you are confident in Plus for that long.
What is the difference between Advanced and Plus?
Advanced is $399 USD a month, or $299 on yearly billing, and includes 15 staff accounts, 3 B2B catalogs, 10 locations and theme customization by market. Plus adds a customizable checkout, unlimited staff, unlimited B2B catalogs and direct company catalogs, 9 expansion stores, 200 locations, higher API limits, Launchpad, custom Functions and priority phone support. If none of those are on your list, Advanced is the better buy.
At what revenue does Plus make sense?
Shopify's own upgrade page says brands typically move to Plus when online sales reach about $80,000 a month, and adds that individual needs vary. In our experience the revenue number matters less than the feature list. A $60,000 a month wholesale brand that needs company-level pricing is a Plus store; a $150,000 a month single-brand D2C store with a stock checkout may not be.
Does Plus pay for itself through lower payment rates?
Rarely on rates alone. Plus has the lowest Shopify Payments card rate of any plan and a 0.2% third-party gateway fee against 0.6% on Advanced, but at $2,300 a month the plan fee is $2,001 more than yearly Advanced. The math only closes on card savings at very high volume, so the case for Plus is almost always a feature you need, with the rate saving as a bonus.
What is checkout extensibility?
It is Shopify's current way to customize checkout: UI extensions built by apps, Shopify Functions for backend rules like discounts and shipping, and branding settings for the look. It replaced the old checkout.liquid file. On Plus you can place apps on the information, shipping and payment pages and use the branding APIs; on other plans you get the editor's branding settings plus apps on the thank you, order status and customer account pages only.
Is checkout.liquid still supported?
No. Shopify's developer documentation says checkout.liquid is unsupported for the information, shipping and payment steps, and it was sunset for the thank you and order status pages on August 28, 2025. If you are moving to Plus from an older Plus contract, or buying a store that still has checkout.liquid customizations, they have to be rebuilt as extensions and Functions.
What are Shopify Functions and do they need Plus?
Functions are small programs that change Shopify's backend logic at fixed points: discounts, payment options, delivery options, cart validation, order routing and bundles. Any plan can use public App Store apps built with Functions. Only Plus stores can run custom apps that contain Functions, which is what you need when no app does exactly what your old rule did.
What happened to Shopify Scripts?
Shopify's Help Center says Scripts were deprecated as of June 30, 2026, and any Scripts still published were deactivated. The replacement is Shopify Functions. A store that relied on line item, shipping or payment scripts now has those rules rebuilt as Functions, either in a public app or a custom one.
Do I need Plus for Shopify Flow?
No. Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Plus stores can use tasks created by custom partner apps, and Flow's usage limits scale with the plan's API limits, which are higher on Plus. Most automation you want to build runs fine on Advanced.
What is Launchpad?
Launchpad is a Plus-only app for scheduling sales and product drops. It can change prices at the start and end of an event, publish products at a set time, raise inventory, switch theme customizations and password-protect the store before launch, with a real-time dashboard during the event. If your team runs drops by hand at midnight, this is one of the first Plus features they notice.
Which B2B features are Plus-only?
Shopify B2B runs on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, with companies, locations, net terms, quantity rules, price breaks and PO numbers on every plan. Plus adds unlimited B2B catalogs against a cap of 3 on other plans, catalogs assigned directly to a company or location, deposit requirements, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment. Wholesale with customer-specific pricing almost always lands on Plus.
What happened to the Plus wholesale channel?
Shopify discontinued the Plus Wholesale Channel on June 28, 2024 and replaced it with B2B on Shopify, which runs in the same store as your retail catalog. A store still carrying wholesale channel data needs that moved to companies, catalogs and price lists. We check this in the audit because old price lists are usually where the surprises are.
What are expansion stores and how many do I get?
Expansion stores are extra Shopify stores under one Plus organization, used for other countries, brands within one contract, or separate physical operations. Shopify's Help Center says a Plus organization can have up to ten stores on its contract at no additional cost, meaning the main store plus 9 expansion stores, and staging stores do not count. Stores do not share products, settings or inventory by default, so each one is a store to run.
Do I need Plus to sell internationally?
No. Every Shopify plan includes an unlimited number of country or region markets with local currencies, domains and languages. Advanced and Plus add theme and checkout customization per market, and Plus alone lets you customize checkout blocks per market and run separate business entities by market. Managed Markets, Shopify's merchant-of-record service, charges 3.25% per transaction on Plus against 3.5% on other plans.
How many staff accounts does Plus include?
Unlimited. Grow allows 5 and Advanced allows 15, with the store owner, collaborators and POS-only staff not counted. Plus also adds custom user groups so you can assign a set of permissions to a whole team at once, plus organization-level users across all your stores.
Are API rate limits higher on Plus?
Yes. Shopify's developer documentation lists the GraphQL Admin API at 100 points a second on standard plans, 200 on Advanced and 1,000 on Plus, and REST at 2, 4 and 20 requests a second. Plus stores can also ask support for a higher limit. If your ERP or PIM sync keeps hitting throttles, that is usually the real reason the upgrade conversation starts.
What are Shopify Payments rates on Plus?
Shopify says Plus has the lowest card rates of any plan and that rates vary by country, so the exact figure for US stores is on the USD table at shopify.com/pricing and on the Payments page in your admin. What is published without regional variation is the third-party gateway fee: 0.2% on Plus against 0.6% on Advanced, 1% on Grow and 2% on Basic. Orders through Shopify Payments and Shop Pay carry no third-party fee on any plan.
Is Shop Pay different on Plus?
No. Shop Pay is included with Shopify Payments on every plan, and Shop Pay Installments is available to US stores selling in USD on orders from $35 to $30,000. What Plus adds around checkout is control over the pages Shop Pay sits in, not a different Shop Pay.
Does Plus include better fraud tools?
The fraud analysis on orders comes with Shopify Payments on every plan, and the Fraud Control app for blocking emails, IPs and billing details is not Plus-specific. Shopify Protect, which covers fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks on eligible Shop Pay orders for US stores, is also not tied to Plus. What Plus adds is bot protection during flash sales and extended payment authorization of up to 30 days on Visa, Mastercard and Amex, with a 1.75% charge for captures after the standard 7 days.
What support does Plus come with?
Shopify's Plus plan page lists priority 24/7 phone and chat support, and the upgrade page says you get the Plus Priority Support team's contact details and an invitation to Jumpstart, Shopify's onboarding program, after the switch. The same page says the plan might include a 99.99% uptime SLA, so ask for the SLA wording in your contract if uptime guarantees matter to you.
What is a Shopify Plus Partner and do I need one?
Shopify's Plus Partner Program lists service partners it has curated for technical expertise with high-volume stores. You do not need one to upgrade, but Shopify's own pricing page says custom development may require a Plus Partner. We work as the advisor and builder on upgrades, and we tell you which parts your team can do without us.
Will the upgrade take my store offline?
No. The plan change itself is done by Shopify, which says it upgrades the store within 24 business hours of signing, and your storefront keeps trading. The work that carries risk is the checkout rebuild, which we do on a draft checkout configuration and switch over once it has been tested with live orders.
Do I have to change my theme?
No. Your Online Store 2.0 theme carries over unchanged, and Plus lets you keep up to 100 themes for seasonal versions and tests. If you have a B2B catalog, you may want theme changes so wholesale buyers see quantity rules and price breaks, which the Trade theme and most recent themes support.
Which apps need Plus?
Shopify's own Plus-only apps are Launchpad and Combined Listings, plus the Audiences app for US and Canadian stores on Shopify Payments. Third-party apps that place blocks on the information, shipping or payment pages of checkout only work on Plus, and custom apps built with Functions only install on Plus. Most of the well-known marketing, support and subscription apps run on any plan.
Can I go headless with Hydrogen without Plus?
Yes. Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework and Oxygen hosting is available at no extra charge on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The difference is scale: Shopify's pricing page lists 1 headless storefront on the standard plans and 25 on Plus. A single headless storefront is not a reason to upgrade on its own.
Does Plus include POS Pro?
Yes. The first 20 POS Pro locations are included in every Plus plan, where POS Pro otherwise costs $89 USD a month per location. If you have more than 20 and Shopify Payments is your primary retail provider, Shopify waives POS Pro for up to 200 retail locations. Plus also raises inventory locations from 10 to 200.
Can I sell in multiple currencies on Plus?
You can on any plan with Shopify Payments and Markets. Local currencies, pricing by market and currency conversion at checkout are not Plus features. Plus adds per-market checkout blocks and business entities, which matter when you have separate legal entities or payment accounts by country.
Can I downgrade from Plus later?
Yes, at the end of your term. Shopify's pricing FAQ says a 1-year or 3-year Plus subscription can be canceled when the term commitment expires, and plan changes to a lower plan take effect at the end of the billing cycle. On downgrade you lose the Plus-only features: staff over the 15-account limit are suspended, B2B catalogs over 3 and direct company catalogs stop, and checkout apps on the information, shipping and payment pages are removed.
How long does an upgrade to Plus take?
Shopify's part is fast: the plan switch happens within 24 business hours of signing. The project around it depends on your checkout. A store with a stock checkout and no B2B can be fully set up on Plus in 2 to 4 weeks in our experience; a store rebuilding checkout rules, adding company catalogs and connecting an ERP is usually 6 to 12 weeks.
What is in the DopaShift Plus readiness audit?
We go through your store and give you a written plan: which Plus features you will actually use, every checkout customization and script you rely on and what replaces it, which apps stay, go or need Plus, your B2B catalog and pricing design, the API and integration load, staff and permission structure, and a cost model with Shopify's published plan fees next to your current bill. It ends with a recommendation, which is sometimes to stay on Advanced.
What does DopaShift do in the upgrade itself?
We configure the Plus organization and users, rebuild checkout with UI extensions and Functions on a draft configuration, set up B2B companies, catalogs and payment terms, move any wholesale channel data, connect or re-test integrations against the new API limits, and run the switch. We keep a baseline of conversion rate, checkout completion and order volume from before the upgrade and check it for 90 days after.
How does your fee work?
The Plus readiness audit is a fixed price, agreed before we start, and the deliverable is the written plan. The upgrade project is quoted as a fixed price after the audit, because the audit is what tells us how much checkout and B2B work there is. Shopify's plan fee, payment processing and app subscriptions are billed to you by Shopify and the app developers, and we list every one in the scope.
Can I try Plus before committing?
Sometimes. Shopify offers a paid Plus trial to eligible merchants at $399 USD a month for 1 to 2 months with most Plus features. If you take no action when it ends, the store is enrolled in a full Plus plan on the terms you chose at setup, so put the end date in your calendar.
Do I need a separate Plus contract for each brand?
Yes. Shopify's Plus pricing page says you get unlimited online stores under one contract but one brand per contract, and multiple brands under one company need a separate Plus contract for each. Expansion stores cover the same brand in other regions or channels, not a second brand.
What is the Plus feature test drive?
It is an organization setting, available only to Plus, that lets you switch on upcoming Shopify features on specific stores before they roll out to everyone. Combined with unlimited staging stores, it means you can test a checkout change or a new platform feature on a copy before it touches production.
