When to upgrade to Shopify Plus: the signs, the math and the trade-offs
The short answer
Upgrade to Shopify Plus when you need a feature only Plus has, not when you cross a revenue line. The Plus-only list as of October 2026 is a customizable checkout, unlimited and company-level B2B catalogs, 9 expansion stores, unlimited staff, 10x API limits, Launchpad and custom Functions. Shopify says brands typically upgrade at about $80,000 a month in online sales. At $2,300 a month on a 3-year term, Plus costs $2,001 a month more than yearly Advanced, and payment rate savings alone rarely cover that.
The wrong reason and the right reasons
Most stores start thinking about Plus because of a number. Sales crossed a line, a Shopify rep called, or a competitor’s job post mentioned Plus. Shopify’s own upgrade page gives the number as about $80,000 a month in online sales, with the caveat that individual needs vary.
We’d put it differently. Revenue is a signal that you might need Plus; it isn’t the reason to buy it. The reason is a feature on the Plus-only list below that your store needs and can’t get any other way. If you can name that feature, the upgrade is usually worth it well below $80,000 a month. If you can’t, it is often not worth it well above.

Just as useful is what is not Plus-only, because this list is where most upgrade pitches overreach. Shopify Flow runs on Basic and up. Markets, local currencies and unlimited country markets are on every plan. Shopify B2B with companies, net terms, quantity rules, price breaks and PO numbers is on every plan. Hydrogen and Oxygen hosting are free on every paid plan. Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments, fraud analysis and Shopify Protect are tied to Shopify Payments, not to Plus. Theme customization per market is on Advanced.
The six signs you have outgrown Advanced
Checkout is where you lose conversion and you can’t touch it. You want a trust badge next to the payment button, a gift message field, a delivery date picker, or a rule that hides a payment method for certain carts. On Advanced, apps can only reach the thank you and order status pages. On Plus they can sit on every page of checkout, and custom Functions can enforce your rules server-side.
You sell wholesale with customer-specific pricing. Three catalogs is enough for a tier structure (retail, wholesale, distributor). It is not enough when key accounts have negotiated prices, because on Advanced a catalog can only be attached to a B2B market, not to a company. Plus lets you assign a catalog straight to a company or location and ask for deposits.
You run more than one store, or should. A Canadian or UK storefront with its own inventory and team, a brand site and an outlet site, or a separate B2B store. Plus includes nine expansion stores under one organization with central users and billing.
You are out of staff seats. Advanced caps you at 15 users. A business with a warehouse team, a support team, a marketing team and an agency hits that early, and the workaround of shared logins fails any security review.
Your integrations are throttled. If your ERP, PIM or OMS sync is designed around Shopify’s 200 point a second GraphQL limit, every catalog update is a queue. Plus raises that to 1,000 and lets you ask support for more. This is the most common reason we see for the upgrade conversation in stores over 10,000 SKUs.
Drops and sales are run by hand. Launchpad schedules price changes, product publishing, inventory and theme switches, and password-protects the store before a drop. If someone on your team is up at midnight clicking publish, that is a Plus feature with a salary attached.
Not sure which of these applies to your store? A Plus readiness audit tells you in writing, and sometimes the answer is to stay on Advanced.
Get a scoped priceThe math, using only Shopify’s published prices
Here are Shopify’s US figures as of October 17, 2026. Advanced is $399 USD a month, or $299 on yearly billing. Plus is $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, for standard setups; higher-volume stores move to a variable platform fee that Shopify does not publish.
So against yearly Advanced, Plus costs $2,001 a month more on the 3-year term, or $2,201 a month more on the 1-year term. That is $24,012 or $26,412 a year before any app or project cost.
Now the two savings Plus brings on payments.
If you use a third-party gateway, the fee Shopify charges on top of your processor drops from 0.6% on Advanced to 0.2% on Plus, a 0.4 point saving. To cover $2,001 a month you need $2,001 ÷ 0.004 = $500,250 a month in gateway volume, about $6 million a year.
If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify says Plus has the lowest card rate of any plan, but publishes the exact rate by region, so look up your two rates on the USD table at shopify.com/pricing. Then the formula is the same: monthly volume needed = $2,001 ÷ (Advanced rate minus Plus rate). If the gap is 0.2 points, that is $2,001 ÷ 0.002 = $1,000,500 a month. If the gap is 0.4 points, it is $500,250 a month.
The point of the exercise is not the exact figure. It is that at Shopify’s own $80,000 a month guidance, rate savings cover something like a tenth of the plan fee increase. Plus pays for itself through the features, or it doesn’t pay for itself.
Three things that do close the gap faster, because they replace a cost you already pay: POS Pro at $89 a month per location, included for 20 locations on Plus; a second or third Shopify store you currently pay for separately, folded into an expansion store; and the Managed Markets fee if you sell cross-border through it, which is 3.25% on Plus against 3.5% elsewhere.
The trade-offs nobody mentions on the sales call
The term. You are signing for one or three years, and Shopify’s pricing FAQ says you cancel when the term expires. The 3-year price is $200 a month lower, which is $7,200 over the term, so the discount is really a bet on your own planning horizon.
The variable fee. Shopify says that for more complex, higher-volume businesses the flat price gives way to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, with different treatment for B2B and D2C orders. It does not publish the threshold or the rate. Get the number in writing before you sign, and model it against your growth plan, because a fee that scales with revenue has a very different shape from a flat $2,300.
Checkout work is a project. The customizable checkout is the headline feature, and using it means building or buying UI extensions and Functions, testing them on a draft configuration, and keeping them maintained as Shopify’s checkout API versions roll. Budget for that as a build, not as a setting.
Apps are billed per store. Expansion stores are free; the apps on them are not. Shopify’s Help Center says apps are billed per store and each live store needs its own theme license.
Downgrading hurts. If you leave Plus later, staff over 15 are suspended, catalogs over 3 stop, direct company catalogs end, and checkout apps on the information, shipping and payment pages are removed. A store that has built its operations on Plus features has a one-way door behind it.
If you have old checkout customizations
checkout.liquid is unsupported for the information, shipping and payment steps, and it was sunset for the thank you and order status pages on August 28, 2025. Shopify Scripts were deprecated on June 30, 2026 and any still published were deactivated. If a store you are buying or taking over has either, the upgrade includes a rebuild. Our checkout extensibility guide covers what maps to what.
How we make the call with you
A Plus readiness audit is a fixed price, and the deliverable is a written plan. We go through your checkout customizations and scripts, your B2B pricing structure, your app list, your integrations and their API load, your staff and permission structure, and your current Shopify bill. Each one gets a line: needs Plus, works on Advanced, or works on Advanced with a different app.
If the “needs Plus” column is empty, we say so and you keep the audit as a roadmap for Advanced. If it isn’t, you get a quoted upgrade project with the checkout, B2B and integration work scoped, and a timeline. Shopify does the plan switch within 24 business hours of signing; the project around it is what takes the weeks, and that’s covered in our cost page and the tech stack guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a revenue threshold for Shopify Plus?
Not a required one. Shopify's upgrade page says brands typically upgrade at about $80,000 a month in online sales, and that individual needs vary. Any store can buy Plus; the question is whether you will use what it adds.
Does Shopify Plus lower my payment processing rates?
Yes. Shopify says Plus has the lowest Shopify Payments card rates of any plan and the third-party gateway fee drops to 0.2% from 0.6% on Advanced. Card rates vary by country, so check the USD table on shopify.com/pricing for the exact figure. The saving is real but it is small next to the plan fee, as the worked example on this page shows.
Can I stay on Advanced and still customize checkout?
Partly. On Basic and above you can brand checkout through the checkout and accounts editor and add apps to the thank you, order status and customer account pages. Apps that place blocks on the information, shipping and payment pages, custom Functions, and the branding APIs need Plus.
What do I lose if I downgrade from Plus later?
Shopify's pricing FAQ says a Plus term can be canceled when it expires, and a lower plan takes effect at the end of the billing cycle. You then lose the Plus-only features: staff over 15 are suspended, B2B catalogs over 3 and direct company catalogs stop working, and checkout apps on the information, shipping and payment pages are removed.
Does the upgrade change my theme or my URLs?
No. Your theme, products, customers, orders and URLs stay as they are. The plan changes what you can do, and the work in an upgrade project is in checkout, B2B setup, apps and permissions, not in the storefront.
