Florida stores moving to Shopify

Florida is the second largest Shopify state by store count, and its stores move with county surtax rules and a low remote seller threshold that other states have to meet when selling in.

The short answer

DopaShift moves Florida stores from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace to Shopify and Shopify Plus. Florida has 115,775 live Shopify stores on Store Leads as of October 9, 2026, second only to California, and its remote seller threshold of $100,000 is the lowest of the four largest Shopify states. Every project includes an SEO and conversion baseline before launch and 90 days of monitoring after it.

Ecommerce in Florida by the numbers

Store Leads counted 115,775 live Shopify stores in Florida on October 9, 2026. That puts Florida second among US states, ahead of Texas and New York and behind only California. The category mix on the same report is 32,964 apparel stores (28.5%), 14,874 beauty and fitness stores (12.8%) and 14,504 home and garden stores (12.5%), and beauty and fitness ranks higher in Florida than it does in California or Texas.

Shopify’s report The Entrepreneur Effect puts the economic activity of Florida businesses on Shopify at $49.7 billion for the year ending June 30, 2026, supporting about 167,000 jobs. Shopify models the figure as the direct, indirect and induced effects of merchant sales, so it is Shopify’s own estimate.

The same Store Leads tracker counted 429 live Magento stores in Florida on October 9, 2026. Only about one store in eight publishes a state, so the real number is higher. Each of those stores runs a version with a fixed end date for standard support, and Magento Open Source gets no extended support once that date passes. On Adobe Commerce Cloud, Adobe can also suspend traffic to unsupported versions from set dates. The Magento hub has the full table, and the version checker reads your version from the storefront.

Sales tax when you move a Florida store to Shopify

As of October 2026, the Florida Department of Revenue requires a person with no physical presence in Florida to register, collect and remit when it made a substantial number of remote sales in the previous calendar year, defined as taxable remote sales with a total above $100,000. There is no transaction count. The law took effect on July 1, 2021, and it covers discretionary sales surtax as well as the state tax. Sales made through a marketplace provider that has certified it will collect are excluded from the seller’s own threshold test.

Florida is a destination state. The general state rate is 6%, and the county surtax rate applies to a taxable item delivered into a county that imposes one. Surtax rates range from 0.5% to 2%, some counties impose none, and for certain transactions only the first $5,000 of a sale is subject to surtax. The Department publishes every county’s rate, effective date and expiry date on Form DR-15DSS each year, so the rates can change in January.

Marketplace providers with a physical presence in Florida, or with facilitated sales above the same $100,000 figure, have collected on behalf of their sellers since July 1, 2021. A seller that receives the provider’s certification does not collect on those sales and leaves them off its return. Shopify leaves marketplace sales out of its Florida liability figure for that reason.

Shopify Tax is available on every plan. It calculates from the buyer’s full address, which is what makes the county surtax work, and it uses product categories to apply the right treatment to each item. It shows where you stand against each state’s threshold, is free until $100,000 in sales, then charges 0.35% per order on standard plans or 0.25% on Shopify Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. Automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so a Florida store moving now files through its accountant or a filing app. Florida also requires persons making a substantial number of remote sales to file and pay electronically. This is not tax advice. We set up collection as the Department’s publications describe it, and your filer confirms it.

What Florida stores usually bring with them

The Florida stores we quote lean toward consumables and home. Supplement, beauty and fitness brands bring subscriptions, bundles and influencer discount codes that need to keep working on day one. Home and garden sellers bring plants, furniture or heavy goods with freight and delivery-window rules that have to be rebuilt in Shopify’s shipping profiles. Both groups usually have a wholesale or retail-partner channel on the side.

Florida’s Shopify base reflects that. Store Leads lists Alani Nu in Boca Raton, Costa Farms in Miami, Travelpro in Boca Raton, Youtooz in Miami and BrandsMart USA in Fort Lauderdale among the state’s top Shopify stores, and each storefront’s code confirms Shopify. None of these are DopaShift clients. They are examples of what Shopify already carries for Florida brands, across supplements, live plants, luggage, collectibles and big-box electronics, which is the first question a store on Magento or BigCommerce tends to ask.

Working with DopaShift from Florida

We work US business hours and reply within 2 business days. Most of Florida is on Eastern Time, which gives a full working day of overlap, and the Central Time panhandle still gets most of the day. We don’t have an office in Florida and won’t claim one. You work with the same person from the first call to the end of the 90-day watch, you get a written baseline of rankings and conversion rate before launch, and you get a weekly note during the build.

Florida stores with a seasonal peak, whether that is the holiday run or the winter visitor season, tell us the dates and we plan the launch away from them.

Where to start

Open the hub for the platform you’re on: Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. Each hub sets out the timeline, what moves as data and what is rebuilt. If you don’t know what your store runs on, the store check on the home page reads it from the URL. Then send us the details for a scoped price.

Questions Florida stores ask us

What is Florida's economic nexus threshold?

As of October 2026, an out-of-state seller must register and collect when its taxable remote sales into Florida exceeded $100,000 in the previous calendar year. There is no transaction count. The rule took effect on July 1, 2021, and sales made through a marketplace provider are excluded from the seller's own test.

How does the county surtax work on Shopify?

Florida's state rate is 6%, and most counties add a discretionary sales surtax that applies to goods delivered into that county. Shopify Tax applies the surtax from the delivery address, which is why a Miami-Dade order and an order to a county with no surtax carry different rates. The Department of Revenue publishes the county rates each year on Form DR-15DSS.

Our Florida store sells supplements. Does anything change?

Supplement and beauty stores usually bring subscriptions and bundles, and those are rebuilt with a subscription app on Shopify because the data does not move as a file. We map every active subscription before launch so customers keep their next ship date. Product categories in Shopify Tax also need checking, since taxability differs by item.

Does the time difference matter for a Miami or Tampa team?

No. We work US business hours, which gives a full working day of overlap with Eastern Time, and the Central Time panhandle is covered too. Every email gets a reply within 2 business days. We don't have a Florida office.
