New York stores moving to Shopify

New York stores arrive with wholesale channels, local tax by delivery address and the $110 clothing exemption, and this page covers how each of those moves to Shopify.

The short answer

DopaShift moves New York stores from Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix and Squarespace to Shopify and Shopify Plus. New York is the only one of the four largest Shopify states that still ties its economic nexus test to a sale count, more than $500,000 and more than 100 sales over four quarters. Every project includes an SEO and conversion baseline before launch and 90 days of monitoring after it.

Ecommerce in New York by the numbers

Store Leads counted 82,887 live Shopify stores in New York on October 9, 2026, fourth among US states behind California, Florida and Texas. Shopify’s report The Entrepreneur Effect puts the economic activity of New York businesses on Shopify at $75.6 billion for the year ending June 30, 2026, second only to California and supporting about 253,000 jobs. The gap between the store count and the dollar figure is the New York story: fewer stores than Florida or Texas, more revenue behind each one. Shopify models the figure as the direct, indirect and induced effects of merchant sales, so it is Shopify’s estimate.

The same Store Leads tracker counted 500 live Magento stores in New York on October 9, 2026, the second largest Magento base after California. Only about one store in eight publishes a location, so the true number is higher.

Those Magento stores are on a clock. Every Magento 2.4 release has a fixed end date for standard support, and Magento Open Source gets no extended support after that date. Adobe Commerce Cloud customers also face dates on which Adobe can suspend traffic to unsupported versions. The Magento hub lists every current date, and the version checker tells you which one applies to your store.

Sales tax when you move a New York store to Shopify

As of October 2026, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance requires a business with no physical presence in the state to register for sales tax when, over the immediately preceding four sales tax quarters, its gross receipts from sales of tangible goods delivered into the state exceeded $500,000 and it made more than 100 such sales. Both tests must be met. New York’s sales tax quarters run March to May, June to August, September to November and December to February, so the lookback does not line up with calendar quarters. A New York store with a physical presence is registered already, and the question becomes which other states it has crossed into.

New York is a destination state. The state rate is 4%, localities add their own rates, and the point of delivery determines the combined rate. Taxable sales delivered within the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District carry a further 0.375%. Clothing and footwear priced under $110 per item are exempt from the state portion, but only some local jurisdictions follow the exemption, which is why Shopify’s tax reference flags it.

Marketplace providers collect New York State and local tax on the sales they facilitate. A seller that has received a Certificate of Collection (Form ST-150) from the provider, or that can point to the provider’s public agreement to collect, does not collect on those sales and reports them as nontaxable. Unlike California, Shopify includes marketplace sales in its New York liability figure, because the state counts facilitated sales toward the threshold.

Shopify Tax works on every plan. It applies rates by the buyer’s full address, which matters in a state where a Brooklyn and a Buffalo order carry different rates, and it uses product categories to apply the clothing exemption. It shows a state-by-state view of threshold progress, is free until $100,000 in sales, then charges 0.35% per order on standard plans or 0.25% on Shopify Plus, capped at $0.99 per order. Automated filing is closed to new enrollment, so a store moving now files through its accountant or a filing app. This is not tax advice. We set up collection as the Department’s pages describe it, and your filer confirms it.

What New York stores usually bring with them

The New York stores we quote split two ways. Fashion and beauty brands arrive with drops, waitlists and high variant counts, and they care most about how the theme looks on a phone. Wholesale and B2B sellers arrive with price lists, net terms and a sales team that takes orders by email, and they care most about whether Shopify B2B replaces their customer groups without a second system.

New York’s Shopify base covers both. Bombas moved to Shopify Plus after its site failed during a television airing, and Brooklinen runs its wholesale channel on a second Shopify store, both per Shopify’s own case studies. Glossier, Kith and Harry’s run on Shopify, which their storefront code shows. None of these are DopaShift clients. They are examples of what the platform already carries for New York brands, which is usually the first question from a store still on Magento or WooCommerce.

Working with DopaShift from New York

We work US business hours and reply within 2 business days. For a team on Eastern Time the overlap is a full working day, so a 10am call in Manhattan is a normal slot for us. We don’t have an office in New York and won’t claim one. You deal with the same person from scoping through the 90-day watch, you get a written baseline of rankings and conversion rate before launch, and you get a weekly note during the build.

New York fashion and gifting stores run their biggest weeks from November through December, so we plan launches away from those weeks and confirm the go-live date with you in writing.

Where to start

Go to the hub for your platform: Magento, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace. Each one explains the timeline, what moves as data and what gets rebuilt. If you’re not certain what your store runs on, the store check on the home page reads it from the URL. Then send us the details and we’ll come back with a scoped price.

Questions New York stores ask us

Does New York still count transactions for economic nexus?

Yes, as of October 2026. A business with no physical presence must register when, over the immediately preceding four sales tax quarters, its sales of tangible goods delivered into the state exceeded $500,000 and it made more than 100 such sales. Both conditions apply, and Shopify's liability view counts against both.

How does the clothing exemption work on Shopify?

Clothing and footwear priced under $110 per item are exempt from New York State sales tax, but some local jurisdictions still charge their local rate. Shopify Tax handles this through product categories, so each clothing product needs the right category before launch. We check that as part of the data audit.

We sell wholesale as well as retail. Does that change the plan?

It changes where the B2B side lands. Shopify B2B is on every plan, but features like unlimited catalogs and catalogs assigned to a company are Plus only. Brooklinen, a Brooklyn brand that is not our client, runs its wholesale on a second Shopify store, which is one of the patterns we price.

What are your working hours for a Manhattan or Brooklyn team?

We work US business hours, so there is a full working day of overlap with Eastern Time. Calls go in your morning or afternoon and every email gets a reply within 2 business days. We don't have a New York office.
