The short answer
A WooCommerce store usually takes 4 to 8 weeks to move to Shopify. Subscriptions, order history and custom plugin data each need their own migration path, and those are what push a project past the product and customer import. Every project includes an SEO and conversion baseline before launch and 90 days of monitoring after it.
Why stores leave
Why WooCommerce stores move to Shopify
- 01
Checkout, payments and shipping each depend on separate plugins, and every update is a chance for one of them to break the store.
- 02
Hosting, PHP updates, security patches and backups are the store owner's job on WooCommerce and the platform's job on Shopify.
- 03
WooCommerce Subscriptions has no built-in export, so active plans need a dedicated migration on top of the product and customer move.
What moves, and what needs planning
Moves cleanly
- Products, variations and images, from the core CSV export
- Categories, rebuilt as collections
- Customers, from a CSV mapped to Shopify's template
- URL redirects for every page with traffic
Needs planning
- Order history, imported with a migration app
- Posts, pages and media, from the WordPress export
- Subscriptions, moved by a subscription app's migration service, since Shopify Subscriptions only imports from apps already on Shopify Checkout
- Product add-ons and custom fields, rebuilt as variants (up to 3 options and 2,048 variants) or metafields
- Multi-currency and tax plugins, replaced by Shopify Markets
- Other plugins, replaced by apps or Shopify Functions
Doesn't move
- Customer passwords. Customers set a new one on first login.
- Reviews. There is no export path, so review apps collect them again.
- Plugin data with no export
- Custom PHP in the theme
How a WooCommerce migration runs
Baseline
Before we touch anything, we record your top URLs, rankings, revenue per landing page and checkout conversion rate. The new store gets measured against this.
Migration
Products, customers, orders and content move over. Every URL that gets traffic gets a redirect, and each one is checked before launch.
90-day watch
Every week after launch we compare traffic and conversion with the baseline. If something drops, we find the cause and fix it.
Conversion sprint
Once the new store is stable, we test the pages that make you money. Conversion work is what we've done for DTC brands for a decade.
Questions WooCommerce stores ask us
Can my WooCommerce subscriptions move to Shopify?
Not through a CSV. Shopify's own Subscriptions app only imports contracts from subscription apps that already run on Shopify Checkout. Apps such as Recharge run a migration from WooCommerce Subscriptions by API, and both systems can run during the switch so billing dates are not missed.
Do my customers keep their accounts?
Customer records move by CSV with names, emails and addresses. Passwords cannot be exported from any platform or imported into Shopify, so each customer sets a new password the first time they log in.
Does order history come across?
Yes, with a migration app. Shopify's WooCommerce guide lists third-party apps for order history because the standard CSV import does not cover orders. Staff order notifications are switched off during the import, or every historical order sends an email.
Will we lose our Google rankings?
Some movement in the first few weeks is normal. Big drops usually come from missing redirects or tracking that broke at launch. We check both against the baseline before launch, then keep checking for 90 days.
