The Shopify Plus tech stack: what a serious store runs, by job
The short answer
A Shopify Plus store runs one app per job: email and SMS, support, subscriptions, returns, reviews, search, loyalty, analytics, ERP connection and B2B. Almost none of the leading apps need Plus; what needs Plus is where they sit in checkout and whether you can build custom Functions behind them. This guide lists two or three verified App Store options per job, what each replaces from Magento or WooCommerce, and which ones depend on Plus.
How to read this guide
Shopify’s own feature set is wider than it was. Subscriptions, search, bundles, B2B, email, Flow automation and basic analytics all ship from Shopify now, some free and some on Plus. So the first question for every job below is whether Shopify’s own tool does enough, and only then which app to add.
Every app named here was checked on apps.shopify.com on October 17, 2026 to confirm it exists and what it is called today. “Needs Plus” means the app itself requires the Plus plan. “Better on Plus” means the app runs on any plan but its checkout placements or custom logic need Plus. We don’t list app prices; they change and most are tiered.
Email and SMS
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS | Magento newsletter and Dotdigital or Mailchimp integrations; WooCommerce Mailchimp, MailPoet or AutomateWoo flows | Any plan |
| Attentive: AI-led Email & SMS | SMS plugins bolted on to WooCommerce; Magento SMS extensions | Any plan |
| Postscript SMS Marketing | The same SMS job, usually chosen alongside Klaviyo for email | Any plan |
Shopify’s own Email app covers campaigns and basic automations, and for a store under a few thousand contacts it is often enough. Past that, Klaviyo is the default because it reads Shopify’s customer, order and segment data natively and most other apps in this guide push events into it. The decision is really email plus SMS in one tool (Klaviyo) or a dedicated SMS tool (Attentive or Postscript) next to it.
What moves in a migration: contact lists, consent status and historical engagement, which most of these tools import from a CSV or from the old platform directly. What doesn’t move is the flow logic, which is rebuilt against Shopify’s events.
Customer support
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Gorgias: AI Helpdesk & Chat | Generic helpdesks with no order context; Magento and WooCommerce live chat extensions | Any plan |
| Zendesk | An existing Zendesk account, which keeps working with Shopify order data in the agent view | Any plan |
| Richpanel: AI Customer Support | The same helpdesk job with a self-service portal for order changes | Any plan |
The thing to look for is whether the agent can see and edit the Shopify order without leaving the helpdesk: refund, duplicate, change address. Gorgias and Richpanel were built for that; Zendesk does it through its Shopify integration and makes sense when support already lives there for other reasons. Shopify’s own Inbox app handles storefront chat if chat is all you need.
Subscriptions
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | Simple subscribe-and-save on WooCommerce Subscriptions or a Magento subscription extension | Any plan, free |
| Recharge Subscriptions App | WooCommerce Subscriptions and Magento subscription extensions, with the subscriber base moved by the vendor | Any plan |
| Skio, a Recharge Company | The same job, chosen by brands that want a passwordless customer portal and build-a-box flows | Any plan |
Subscriptions on Shopify run through Shopify Checkout and Shopify’s selling plan API, so whichever app you choose, the subscription contract is a Shopify object and the card is vaulted with Shopify Payments. That is why Shopify’s own Subscriptions app can only import contracts from apps already on Shopify Checkout, and why a WooCommerce or Magento subscriber base moves through the app vendor’s migration service, with tokens transferred from the old gateway. Plan that step early; it depends on your current processor cooperating.
Returns and exchanges
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Loop Returns & Exchanges | Magento RMA extensions; WooCommerce returns plugins; manual returns by email | Any plan |
| AfterShip Returns & Exchanges | The same job, often chosen when AfterShip already handles tracking | Any plan |
| Redo | Returns, package protection and tracking in one app | Any plan |
Shopify’s own returns in the admin cover the basics: a return created on the order, a label, a refund or exchange. The apps add the customer-facing portal, exchange-for-anything, store credit and the rules engine. Return history from Magento or WooCommerce does not migrate; the portal starts with orders placed on Shopify, which is one more reason to import your order history with a return window in mind.
Send us your current app and extension list. The audit marks each one as native, app, custom or not needed, and tells you which ones need Plus.
Get a scoped priceReviews
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Yotpo: Product Reviews App | Magento review module and Yotpo for Magento; WooCommerce native reviews | Any plan |
| Okendo: Reviews & Loyalty | The same job, with attributes and photo reviews, and loyalty in the same app | Any plan |
| Judge.me Product Reviews App | The same job at a lower tier, with a free plan | Any plan |
Reviews are one of the few things that move from the old platform, because every review app imports a CSV of reviewer, rating, text, date and product handle. Map the product handles before the import, since a review attached to a product that was merged or renamed in the catalog migration lands nowhere.
Search and merchandising
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Search & Discovery | Magento’s Elasticsearch or OpenSearch layered navigation; WooCommerce filter plugins | Any plan, free |
| Boost AI Search & Filter | Magento layered navigation extensions and merchandising rules | Any plan |
| Klevu AI Search & Discovery | Klevu for Magento, if you already run it, or an enterprise search such as Algolia or Searchspring | Any plan |
Shopify’s free app covers filters, synonyms, product boosts and recommendations, and for a catalog under a few thousand products it is the right starting point. The paid tools earn their place on larger catalogs with merchandising rules by collection, search analytics and personalization. Magento stores are usually the ones that need them, because Magento’s attribute-driven layered navigation is what customers are used to and Shopify’s filters are built on product options, tags and metafields instead.
Loyalty and referrals
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Smile: Loyalty Program Rewards | Magento reward points (Adobe Commerce) and WooCommerce points plugins | Any plan |
| LoyaltyLion Loyalty Program | The same job, with tiers and integrations built for larger stores | Any plan |
| Yotpo: Loyalty Rewards Program | The same job, chosen when reviews and email already run on Yotpo | Any plan |
Points balances migrate by CSV in all three. Redemption at checkout is where Plus shows up: on Plus the loyalty app can place a redemption block in checkout, and on other plans the customer redeems on the cart page or in their account. Shopify’s own discount system handles the mechanics once the app issues the discount.
Analytics and attribution
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify analytics and ShopifyQL | Magento reports and most WooCommerce analytics plugins | Any plan; ShopifyQL Notebooks on Plus |
| Triple Whale | Spreadsheet blending of ad platform and order data; Magento BI extensions | Any plan |
| Polar: AI Platform for commerce | The same job, chosen for multi-store reporting and custom metrics | Any plan |
Shopify’s built-in reports are good enough that many Advanced stores never add an analytics app. What the paid tools add is marketing attribution, profit after ad spend and cohort reporting across stores, which matters more once there are expansion stores. GA4 runs on every plan through Shopify’s Google & YouTube app. Shopify Audiences, which builds ad audiences from Shopify’s network, is Plus-only and limited to US and Canadian stores on Shopify Payments.
ERP and OMS connectors
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| NetSuite ERP Connector (Oracle NetSuite) | A Magento to NetSuite connector or custom middleware | Any plan; better on Plus for API limits |
| Pipe17 | Custom order routing code and point-to-point integrations between store, 3PL and ERP | Any plan; better on Plus for API limits |
| Shopify Flow | Magento cron jobs and WooCommerce automation plugins for simple rules | Any plan, free; custom app tasks on Plus |
This is the job where Plus is most often decided. The connector itself installs on any plan, but a catalog or inventory sync that runs hundreds of updates a minute lives or dies on the API limit: 200 GraphQL points a second on Advanced, 1,000 on Plus, with the option to ask support for more. Shopify also exempts Plus stores from the 10,000 new variants a day cap that applies once a store has 500,000 variants. If your integration partner has built retry queues around throttling, that is a Plus store already.
For simpler rules, such as tagging orders, holding fulfillment on risk, or notifying a channel, Flow replaces a surprising amount of middleware for free.
B2B
| App | Replaces | Plus? |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify B2B (built in) | Adobe Commerce B2B companies, shared catalogs and payment on account; WooCommerce wholesale plugins | Any plan for the basics; unlimited catalogs, direct company catalogs, deposits and partial payments on Plus |
| SparkLayer B2B & Wholesale | A wholesale ordering front end with rep ordering and quick order forms, layered on Shopify’s company data | Any plan |
| BSS B2B Wholesale Pricing | WooCommerce wholesale pricing and registration plugins on smaller B2B stores | Any plan |
Start with Shopify’s own B2B. Companies, locations, net terms, quantity rules, price breaks, PO numbers and the Trade theme are on every plan, and the cap that forces the Plus decision is 3 catalogs across all B2B markets. Once each key account needs its own prices or you take deposits on wholesale orders, Plus is the plan. The apps earn their place on top of that for sales rep ordering, quote requests and bulk order forms, which Shopify does not do natively. Shopify’s old Plus Wholesale Channel was discontinued on June 28, 2024, so any store still carrying its data moves it to B2B companies and catalogs.
Apps in checkout are the Plus line
The pattern across every job above is the same. The app installs on any plan. The moment it wants to render a block on the information, shipping or payment page of checkout, or run a custom Function, it needs Plus. Shopify’s Help Center lists exactly which app types need Plus, and we cover the mapping in the checkout extensibility guide.
What we do with this list
In a Plus readiness audit we take your current extension or plugin list and this reference stack and produce one table: each job, the tool you run today, the Shopify-native option, the app we’d pick, what migrates and what is rebuilt, and whether Plus is needed. That table is most of the scope for the upgrade project, and it is why the audit comes first. The when to upgrade guide covers the plan decision itself, and the cost page covers what you’ll pay Shopify after.
Frequently asked questions
Do these apps need Shopify Plus?
Mostly no. The apps named here install on any plan. Plus matters in two places: apps that place blocks on the information, shipping and payment pages of checkout only work on Plus, and custom apps built with Shopify Functions only install on Plus. Launchpad and Combined Listings, Shopify's own apps, are Plus-only.
How many apps should a Plus store run?
One per job, and no job without an owner. The stores that run into trouble have three apps doing overlapping work on the product page and nobody who knows why. We'd sooner see a store with eight well-chosen apps than one with thirty, because each app is a script on the storefront and a line on the monthly bill.
Can we keep our Magento or WooCommerce tools?
Some of them. Klaviyo, Gorgias, Zendesk, Yotpo, Klevu and NetSuite all have Shopify apps, so if you already use them the account moves and the integration changes. Platform-specific extensions, such as a Magento search module or a WooCommerce subscriptions plugin, are replaced by the Shopify equivalent and their data migrated where an export exists.
Why don't you list app prices?
Because they change often and most are tiered on order volume or contact count, so a single number would be wrong for your store. Each app's current pricing is on its App Store listing, and we put the exact plan and price for every app in the scope of an upgrade project.
